Course Contents:
Phase transformations and microstructure formation; different classifications: first order vs higher order, diffusion vs diffusion less, discontinuous vs continuous; free energy-composition diagrams; nature of interfaces in crystalline materials and their role
in phase transformations; thermodynamics and kinetics of nucleation; solid state precipitation: phase diagram, stable and metastable/intermediate phases, solvus
temperatures, growth forms and kinetics, discontinuous precipitation; spinodal
decomposition and disorder-order transformations; eutectoid transformation; massive transformation; martensitic transformation and shape memory effect.
About the Instructor: Dr. Mayur Vaidya is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, IIT Hyderabad. Her research interest is in Diffusion-deformation correlation in materials, Diffusion in multicomponent alloys, Nanoscience & Technology, Materials Processing, Powder Metallurgy, Diffusion in Materials, High Entropy Alloys, Oxidation.
