Faculty Name: Dr. Ashok Kamaraj
Course Name: Kinetics of Metallurgical Processes
Course Period: 21 st Oct to 25 th Nov 2024 (Monday 04: 00 PM to 05:25 PM; Thursday 02:00 PM to 03:55 PM)
Number of Credits: 1 credits
Course Contents: Reaction kinetics: Homogeneous reaction kinetics, molecularity, order of reactions and rate equations, theories of activation energy, rate-limiting step, and catalyst. Process kinetics: Heterogeneous kinetics, fluid (gas/liquid) -solid reactions (progressive conversion, shrinking core, shrinking particle model), liquid-liquid reactions (mass transfer models), gas-liquid systems, concepts of reactor design. Introduction to similarity criteria, dimensional analysis & modeling of the metallurgical systems.
What you'll learn: This course imparts basic and advanced knowledge of metallurgical processes related to metal extraction and recycling. At the end of the course, one can apply the fundamental knowledge for detailed and critical kinetic evaluation of the metallurgical processes & systems.
About the Instructor: Dr. Ashok has over a decade of experience in process modeling, simulation, metal extraction, and recycling. Recent highlights of his research work are demystifying the shape effect of BOF on the tapping process, developing a hot model to simulate continuous casting in-mold phenomena, indigenizing technologies for cannon liner steel, and hydrogen standard (CRM) in steel. He was conferred the Young Metallurgist (Metal Science) Award by the Ministry of Steel (GoI) in 2021. He was recently conferred the IEI Young Engineers Award from the Institution of Engineers (India). He is presently one of the editors of TRANS IIM and IIM Metals News.
