Course Contents:
  1. INTRODUCTION
    • Introduction, Historical perspective, Advantages and applications
  2. POWDER PRODUCTION METHODS
    • Metal powders: mechanical process/ mechanical alloying, atomisation process, chemical process, electrochemical process
    • Ceramic powders: oxide and non-oxide ceramic powders, whiskers
  3. POWDER CHARACTERISTICS AND PROPERTIES
    • Particle shapes and size, particle size classification methods, surface analysis, powder flowability, apparent and tap density
  4. POWDER COMPACTION AND SHAPING
    • Cold compaction methods, hot compaction methods, isostatic pressing methods, powder injection moulding, roll compaction, extrusion, spray forming, pressureless shaping, etc.
  5. SINTERING FUNDAMENTALS
    • Definition, driving forces, stages of sintering, multi-component sintering, sintering aids/ additives, liquid phase sintering, sintering kinetics
  6. SINTERING TECHNIQUES
    • Pressureless sintering, pressure-assisted sintering (hot press, HIP, SPS, microwave), sintering equipment, sintering atmospheres
    • Sintering of different metals and ceramics powders
    • Post-sintering operations
  7. PM-ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING
    • Powders for AM: powder characteristics and product quality
    • Powder based AM processes of metals and ceramics: powder bed fusion, SLM, DED, etc.
  8. POWDER METALLURGY OF NANO POWDERS
    • Nano powders, issue associated with nano powders, handling and processing, Sintering kinetics and processes
  9. APPLICATIONS
    • Electrical contact materials, hard metals and cemented carbides, magnetic materials, porous materials, friction materials, etc.
What you'll learn: Learn the basics of powder metallurgy, powder production methods, sintering techniques, additive manufacturing and analysing sintering data.
About the Instructor: Prof. Bharat Panigrahi, is a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering. He has extensive experience of more than 25 years in the field of PM. He core-expertise are in powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing processes.
