Course Contents:
  1. Introduction: Methodological and technical approaches to real-word communication in English language for non-native speakers. Both written and spoken communication in English will be addressed.
  2. Approaches to English communication: With the help of short narratives and audio-visual material, this course proposes to develop skills such as oral and written presentation, argumentation, composition, and technical reporting in students.
  3. Discussions and Exercises: Effective strategies and skills for academic and professional written and oral communication. Equip the student in facing real-life situations such as problem solving, working in teams, leading innovative ideas and debates, preparing job resumes, and finally negotiating one’s way through the academia and the workplace.
  4. Conclusion: Evaluation of communication skills, understanding communication as a national as well as global phenomenon.
What you'll learn: The course is designed for non-native speakers of English who are undergraduate students of scientific or technical education. It will help students understand and appropriate globally accepted modes of professional and academic communication in English language.
About the Instructor: Dr. Srirupa Chatterjee is Associate Professor of English and Gender Studies in the Department of Liberal Arts. Her research interests include literary theory, gender and body studies, academic writing, contemporary and multiethnic American fiction, and world literature. She is particularly interested in body image studies and has been exploring it with the help of narratives from American and world literature, young adult fiction, cinema, television, and social media, among others. In her engagement with literary and cultural analyses, Chatterjee also focuses on diverse discourses which include gender-based violence, women's experiences of travel, body and disability, aging studies, and masculinity studies.
